Crypto Index Weekly: Bitcoin Holds the Lead as Sentiment Cools
Roman Wiligut· Analyst and AI ResearcherWeeklyIndicesMarket
CI100 is at 996.12, with a reported 30-day return of -6.16%. Altseason is unconfirmed, and Fear and Greed cooled from 63 to 50.
The case for an immediate altcoin season remains unconfirmed. Bitcoin accounts for about 60% of the crypto market, sentiment has cooled, and recent sector strength has failed to carry every basket with it. For index investors, the useful question is how much exposure sits in the largest assets and how much depends on a particular theme.
The current CI100 dashboard carries a bearish medium-term reading and reports a negative 30-day return. That is a different picture from the optimism of the previous edition. It does not establish the size of this week's decline: a rolling monthly number and a Friday-to-Friday return measure different things.

Cryptoindex.ai snapshot retrieved on 23 October at approximately 11:29 UTC. Levels are individual index points, not comparable portfolio prices. Monthly figures are the dashboard's reported values. Seven-day returns are withheld because the available detail pages reproduce the 24-hour change under the 7D label and describe a rolling 24-hour base.
Within the reported monthly data, CI10 and CI Alts show deeper losses than CI100. That suggests the headline flagship reading should not stand in for every portfolio. It is a comparison of published monthly figures, not a verified attribution of weekly performance.
Sector strength has become uneven
The monthly dashboard still shows gains for RWA, gaming and AI. Privacy and derivatives-related themes sit on the other side of the table. This dispersion matters more than choosing one label for the whole altcoin market: two portfolios can both avoid Bitcoin and still experience very different results.
| Theme | Reported 30D |
|---|---|
| AI | +8.26% |
| RWA | +12.68% |
| Gaming | +10.79% |
| DePIN | −6.57% |
| Privacy | −14.27% |
| Perpetual DEX | −18.91% |
| Prediction markets | −18.59% |
| DeFi | −3.27% |
A positive month does not mean a sector escaped the latest selling. The 23 October AI brief lists NEAR, TAO and ICP among its daily drags; the privacy brief identifies ZEC, XMR and ROSE. These are daily constituent moves, not a ranking of weekly winners and losers.
There is also overlap between themes. A token can appear in more than one basket, so holding several sector indices does not automatically spread risk across independent sources of return. Composition and weight concentration remain essential to interpreting the chart.
External benchmarks need the same clock
CCi30 published a live level of 18,201.31 at 10:37 GMT on 23 October, with a month-to-date decline of 8.51%. Nasdaq's official NCI page showed 4,001.59 dated 21 October. Those observations cannot be placed beside today's rolling CI100 level as if they were synchronized weekly closing prices.
CMC100, NCI and CCi30 remain useful references, but a defensible weekly league table requires the same starting date, ending date and valuation convention. No claim of CI100 outperformance follows from the available snapshots. The distinction also applies to thematic proxy baskets, which should not be presented as the official NAV of an investment product.
Sentiment cooled before breadth confirmed
Alternative.me showed Fear and Greed at 50, down from 63 a week earlier and 68 the previous day. The change is 13 index points over the week. Cryptoindex.ai's sentiment page still displayed 68 with a 22 October chart date, so the newer provider reading is the relevant reference for this edition.
The Cryptoindex.ai Altseason page remained below the 75 threshold, although its headline and chart disagreed at 58 and 56. The daily briefs showed another nearby reading. The exact score therefore needs reconciliation, but every observed value gives the same regime classification: altcoin season is not confirmed.
Bitcoin dominance hovered around 60.0% to 60.1%. Dominance is a share of market capitalization, not proof of new money entering Bitcoin. It can rise while Bitcoin falls if other assets lose value faster. Stablecoin share was approximately 11%, while search interest remained subdued at 12 out of 100.
Composition and rebalancing
CI100 uses a factor-based selection and weighting approach; CI10 is described as equal-weighted, while CI15, CI25 and CI50 use market-cap weights. These designs answer different questions. Equal weighting increases the influence of smaller constituents relative to a market-cap portfolio; a larger constituent count alone does not guarantee less concentration.
What to watch next
- Whether sentiment stabilizes after the fall to neutral.
- Whether altcoin participation improves alongside a sustained decline in Bitcoin's market share.
- Whether AI, RWA and gaming retain their monthly gains after the latest selling.
- Whether index histories support a consistent seven-day comparison.
- Whether any constituent or weight changes are documented before attributing returns to rebalancing.
The available evidence supports a cautious reading of market breadth. Bitcoin remains central, and monthly sector dispersion is large. A rebound in a few tokens would be an early development to monitor; it would take broader participation to change that assessment.
